High above the eastern edge of Arizona's Painted Desert, the Hopi Indians, pronounced Hope-ee, are preparing for Spring. Following traditions passed down through millennia uncounted these experts of dry-desert farming ready themselves for yet another growing season when corn, beans, and squash will fill their fields. In pueblos of stone and mortar these farmers, artists, and warriors live atop mesas overlooking the wind swept desert far below. For two thousand years they have thrived in this arid land, surviving both drought and invasion by the Spaniard and the American. A soft spoken and friendly people, the Hopi celebrate life through family, community, dance, and a deep spiritual connection with Mother Earth.
With a native Hopi as your guide, wander through the 1,000 year old pueblos of the mesas. Explore pueblo ruins that have been closed to visitors for over 300 years. Visit with Hopi artisans in their studios as they demonstrate their craft in clay, silver, and wood. Lunch on traditional Hopi Blue Corn cuisine. Then it’s off to a remote location to explore one of the largest petroglyph (rock art) sites in America.
